And Speaking About Electrification of Larger Vehicles, How About Delivery Vans?

Our blog series this month has discussed the growth in electric vehicles (EVs) that has occurred over the last few year, and how they will grow even more in the next several years. Our last blog discussed the electrification of public transit buses; while we are all familiar with these large vehicles, there is an even more ubiquitous large vehicle in most cities – the delivery van. To put the need for delivery vans in perspective, let’s look at Amazon, which delivers over 2.5 billion packages each year. Amazon went from delivering 20% of their own packages to 50% and climbing, rivaling UPS’s 4.7 billion and FedEx’s 3 billion deliveries, and well on pace to pass those two within a few years. In 2018 alone, Amazon purchased 20,000 Mercedes Sprinter vans for the “last-mile”, making Amazon the largest customer of these vans.

Like public transit buses, electrification of delivery vans is also on a rapid pace. Amazon again is a great example – they are a major investor in EV start-up Rivian, and have booked an order for 100,000 electric delivery vans. Amazon is also not waiting for the Rivian to help meet its 2030 target of 100% renewable energy. An Amazon delivery truck with “100% Electric” written on the side was spotted by Ben Sullins of Teslanomics and photo and video uploaded to Twitter. Lightning Systems, which converts class 3 to Class 8 diesel and gas vehicles to all electric, appears to be helping Amazon electrify its vehicles.

And Amazon is only one part of the total picture when it comes to delivery vans – both FedEx and UPS are also electrifying their fleets. The interesting question is to what extent these companies will utilize public charging infrastructure to charge these vehicles versus building their own infrastructure.
