Rhombus Achieves UL 1741SA Certification

Today we announced that the Rhombus Energy Solutions 60kW Power Conditioning System (PCS) achieved UL 1741SA certification. UL 1741SA defines the design and testing requirements for bidirectional, grid tied, “smart” inverters and electric vehicle (EV) chargers which are part of distributed generation (DG) grid services and applications. For our 60kW PCS, the specific application is Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G) charging – the use of the energy stored in an electric vehicle (EV) to augment the energy in a grid during times of peak demand. Also of note, our EV charging systems include a cloud-based software platform from Nuvve Corporation which allows the aggregation of communications between multiple PCSs and the grid system provider.
The value of bi-directional EV charging and V2G for fleet operators is huge. By putting energy back onto the grid during peak hours, EV fleet operators can significantly reduce their energy costs. The design and testing of bi-directional EV charging systems, especially those that have to interoperate with the utility grid, is significantly more difficult than the design of unidirectional EV chargers, which is why Rhombus is one of only a few companies to achieve this capability. Rhombus plans to certify our other PCSs (30kW/60kW, 125kW, and 500kW) to UL 1741SA in the near future. We will also extend our UL 1741SA certifications in the near future by certifying our PCS under UL 9741 with dispensers from Rhombus and other industry partners.
