Building Partnership Ecosystems to Create V2G Solutions for EV Fleets

It is seldom the case that a single company can build an entire solution to a complex problem. Even Apple iTunes®, which was a game-changer when it announced in 2001, still relied on partnerships with music studios, artists, music publishers, and the GraceNote® database to be successful. That is why ecosystem development is so critical in our industry, and why building an ecosystem for fleet EV charging, and in particular for vehicle to grid (V2G) applications, is one of Rhombus’ key priorities in 2020. One of the key functions in any fleet charging infrastructure is the communication between the bi-directional charger resources and the utility partners. The Nuvve Energy Regulation Aggregator (NERA) cloud-connected software platform provides this distributed energy resource (DER) bridge. The software looks at the energy and power available from each vehicle, the amount of energy that the vehicle will likely require for its next trip, and the local utility demands/pricing to determine how much power to put back into the grid from each vehicle to maximize EV owner benefit. It is made possible by advanced vehicle to charger and charger to cloud communication. This includes communication and evaluation of battery management and vehicle operation/schedule parameters. Rhombus EV charging solutions utilize these software integrations and solutions for certain customer deployments to provide a complete, high-performance V2G solutions that adapt to changing energy markets and maximize EV customer benefits.
Rhombus has built high-power bi-directional inverters for renewable energy such as “behind the meter” grid energy storage systems for several years.
