Practical Examples of V2X Deployment

So if vehicle to anything (V2X; includes vehicle-to-grid, vehicle-to-building, and vehicle-to-home) has so much promise, why aren’t there many real deployment of V2X? In fact, there are a significant number of them across the world; some of the projects include:
- White Plains, NY: In 2018, LION Electric, Nuvve, and Con Edison teamed up to deploy a school bus-based V2G program to demonstrate the ability to back up the utility grid in White Plains, NY. In December 2020 the system demonstrated bi-directional flow of energy from the bus to the grid.
- Nissan Cranfield Technical Centre, UK: Nissan Europe, ON, and UK Power Networks collaborated on a developmental project utilizing Nissan LEAF2s and e-NV200 vehicles. A total of twenty (20) vehicles were deployed as a part of the program, which included the transfer of power back to the grid.
- Colchester, Vermont: The project included Green Mountain Power, Fermata Energy, and an aggregation platform called Virtual Peaker. The project dispatched 6.7GWh of energy to the grid in 2020, primarily for peak shaving.
- Pekin, IL: Rhombus, Blue Bird, and Nuvve installed a V2G-capable solution for Pekin’s school district last month. The solution includes a Blue Bird electric bus, Rhombus bi-directional 60kW DC fast charger, and Nuvve aggregation software.
This is a small list of the hundreds of programs that are ongoing in the US, Japan, Denmark, and other locations in the world. Supporting this is a growing number of vehicles that support V2G, an area where medium- and heavy-duty (M/HD) electric vehicles hold significant promise. Key to all of these is bi-directional DC chargers, which take the DC power out of the vehicle and convert it back to AC to support the grid and to power buildings, homes, and infrastructure during emergencies.
