California – The ‘Golden State’ for EV Grants and Incentives

(Rick Sander, CEO, Tuesday May 25, 2021)

If you look at any number of metrics for electric vehicle (EV) adoption, it is hard to come to a conclusion other than that California is really the “Golden State” for EVs. Let’s look at some number to help quantify this:

  • EV Sales: California had just under half of the US’s 320,000 EV sales in 2019, with several California cities having EV sales %s of over 5% as shown in the chart below.
  • EV Registrations: California has 256, 800 EVs registered by August 2020 – 47% of the total US EV registrations. This is more than the next 23 states combined!
  • EV Adoption Rate: California’s EV adoption rate is 1.7%, almost 3X that of the next highest state (Colorado at 0.65%).
  • Public Electric Charging Outlets: California has one-third of the nation’s public EV charging outlets, and the second highest rate of outlets per 10K vehicles (23.8, second only to Vermont with 35.9 public outlets per 10K vehicles).

The chart also illustrates fairly clearly why California is the ‘Golden State’ for EV – consumer incentives and promotions. In January 2021, California had 94 different state incentives for EV purchases. To put this in perspective, the federal government had 47 incentives (which add to California’s incentives); Colorado was second with 22 state incentives! Making EVs more affordable (and having the public charging infrastructure to support them) is the key to EV adoption.

If you are looking for made in the USA high-power DC fast charging systems for those EVS, look to Rhombus Energy Solutions.
