Why Short-Medium Distance Delivery Trucks are Going Electric

It used to be that you could tell that the holiday season was approaching was by seeing holiday lights hanging on people’s houses. Today, a sight that is just as ubiquitous as the holiday lights are delivery trucks. With more and more people doing their holiday shopping online, the last few weeks and this week should see a plethora of delivery trucks from the US Postal Service and companies like FedEx and UPS on the streets. And don’t even start to mention Amazon, who vehicles are more and more a constant fixture on both city streets and the highways. With people now ordering both prepared food and groceries online in ever-increasing numbers, delivery vehicles (especially trucks and vans) will only become more dominant forms of traffic in our cities.

One trend that parallels the increase in delivery vehicles on our streets and highways is the electrification of those vehicles. There are a lot of environmental reasons for this, including reduction in vehicle-generated air pollution (certainly a big concern in metropolitan areas) and reduced noise, but financial/economic reasons are just as strong. While electric vehicles (EVs) are (at least today) more expensive to purchase, in the long run the operating and maintenance costs are significantly lower than those for gas or diesel vehicles. EVs have far less parts than gas or diesel vehicles, and grid-generated power, whether it is from natural gas or renewables such as solar or wind, is significantly less expensive at the vehicle on a per-mile basis than gas or diesel fuel.

The one area where EVs lag gas or diesel vehicles, at least today, is in the fueling (or in the case of EVs, charging) infrastructure. This is especially true for the high-voltage charging, which is required for most larger vehicles and is more and more in demand for autos, light trucks, and SUV EVs to reduce charging times.
