The Capture and Management of Data on the Edge (of the Grid) – Lots of Challenges!

I get asked at parties and other social gatherings about what we do at Rhombus. When I say that one of the things we focus on (and lead the industry in) is in helping our customers capture and gather data on their energy usage, I always get the response “That’s easy, right?” While in many industries data gathering is fairly straightforward, in the case of distributed energy management solutions there are significant challenges.

Unlike most commercial settings, most of our customers truly live “on the edge”. Use cases such as fleet EV charging, energy storage, and microgrids (especially) often do not have high-bandwidth connections to the cloud – in some cases, the connections may be highly intermittent. Then there is the issue of computing power on the edge, which is needed to collect and provide the initial analysis of data. Most high-power systems do not incorporate significant computational resources due to cost issues. Then there is the issue of bringing all of the data together where it can be analyzed. These are some of the problems that we are helping customers overcome, whether they are fielding fleet EV charging systems, energy storage systems, or microgrids.
